X had melody, and a girl and a guy singer on equal footing that weren't afraid to mix fast guitars with of-kilter country-inspired harmonies, all elements that captured my attention the first time I heard them back in 1982. Exene, like her former partner John Doe, has moved on and her new record is a sweet slightly melancholy blend of folk and Americana, which still rings with the off-kilter harmonies she became so well known for. Thus, I was thrilled when she asked if she could stop by my store to play. Way appropriate considering she was one of the few strong confident female role models I had when I started getting into punk rock those many years ago.
Instead of celebrating Record Store Day like everyone else that previous Saturday we'll celebrate on Tuesday April 20, 2010. Events will start rolling at 5 pm with a behind-the-scenes tour of the Gearhead Records Warehouse, and Hellbound Glory will kick the music off at 6 pm for this free, all ages, alcohol-free public event with Exene going on at 7pm. The party will be catered by the local seasonal cuisine restaurant Monticello Bistro, featuring delectable noshes made with ingredients grown locally here in Yolo County. Over the next month, I'll be writing daily posts in my personal blog unveiling the story of Gearhead Records and my personal trek into the music business more than 25 years ago.
The entire month of April, we'll celebrate the artists that have shared this wacky world with us by putting the entire catalog on sale. So please, save the date, Tuesday April 20th, 2010, and come celebrate 10 years of kick ass punk 'n' roll with us.
Taking their cue from The Runaways and Girlschool, Mensen wrote catchy, sing-along aggressive female-fronted rock anthems that not only nodded to the bands they adored, but took the music to a new level with buzz-saw guitar and ricochet drum beats. Gearhead Records released two records for Mensen, Delusions of Grandeur and Oslo City and they toured Europe with many well-known bands, including The Hellacopters and Turbonegro. Unfortunately, Mensen were never able to make it to the US, where they more than likely would have become the darlings of the emerging raw rock n' roll Turbojugend scene.
The normal ups and downs that hit many bands took its toll on Mensen. Many line-up changes left the band unsteady, and after one final European tour in the fall of 2004, the band called it. The band members scattered and several can be found in a new venture, Mary's Kids. Mensen's legacy of kick ass female-fronted rock lives on as new fans discover the band through various online pod casts for Vans and Airwalk female product lines.
Outlaw country enthusiasts and rebels worldwide bend an ear this way! The brand new full-length release from Reno's country-fried scumbags Hellbound Glory is shipping now! Old Highs and New Lows is the second "official" record from this band of outlaws, but includes songs from their first self-titled release, which only briefly saw the light of day. Mixing in brand new material with updated versions of these earliest tracks, the band truly does blend the old and new.
Adding banjo, pedal steel, organ and fiddle, this record is an homage to the best of 1970s outlaw country ala Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson and mixes it with a modern day approach to country - songs about poppin' pills and heroin overdoses, along with the traditional tales of too much whiskey and broken hearts. The cover is a beautiful tattoo inspired take on an old time dime-store novel painted by none other than tattoo artist "Cuz'n" Bill Lorenz from Sacramento Tattoo. Order your copy of this fabulous new CD today, and we'll throw in a free promotional poster!! Check the band's myspace page for upcoming tour dates.

This will be the first time I Walk The Line has toured the US. Playing dark moody melodic punk, I Walk The Line released their newest record Desolation Street on January 23, 2007 on Gearhead Records. The White Barons, who formed at the beginning of 2006, released their debut record on February 20, 2007. Featuring the famous burlesque dancer Eva Von Slut on vocals, the band has already attracted an enthusiastic following to their edgy trashy punk sound. The Thunder Boys will release their debut 7" single on Gearhead Records in late March, and will be opening the show each night during the tour. Fresh out of high school, the quartet pulls from the best rock n' roll influences around, including The New York Dolls, Johnny Thunders' Heartbreakers, The Jones and The Rolling Stones.

Happy Holidays from your pals at Gearhead!
Featuring the eye-popping psychobilly front woman Eva Von Slut, the band plays a blend of punk and rock n' roll infused with infectious backing "whoa" style vocals reminiscent of The Misfits in their heyday. Fueled by an unholy mixture of booze, drugs, and rock n' roll fury, the band defies being put into any genre, yet instantly suck you in with the melodic hooks, a nose-to-the grindstone guitar/bass onslaught and hardcore-style drums. This is edgy bad-assed rock n' roll played by a gang you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley.
The White Barons started as a side-project for the band members but quickly gelled into the main focus for all involved. Eva Von Slut, apart from singing for the legendary punk band The Insaints and Thee Merry Widows, also has a burgeoning career as a well-known burlesque dancer, performing on stages all over the world. Brothers Nate and Johnny previously played in The Whiskey Dick Darryls, and drummer Adam pounded skins for the popular hardcore band Time in Malta.
They will be embarking on their first US tour in January 2007 and are scheduled to play the Gearhead Records showcase at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas March 2007.
Gearhead Records established its presence as the leader in the rock n' roll/punk rock genre (punk n' roll) when they had a break-out hit with The Hives from Sweden in 2002, and shortly after, The Hellacopters, New Bomb Turks and The Wildhearts. They continue to find and release edgy exciting bands that exemplify the spirit of rock n' roll.
Other bands on the roster include Gitogito Hustler, Electric Eel Shock and The Spunks from Japan, Turbo A.C.'s from New York, The Lords of Altamont from Los Angeles, CA, and The Black Furies from San Francisco, CA.

Located about 15 miles west of Sacramento (the capital of California) Yolo County is the 3rd fastest growing county in California. Unfortunately, 1 out of 7 people living in this area do not get enough to eat on a daily basis.

Keep on rockin', and thank you in advance!
I Walk The Line was started as a side-project from some of the membersí other bands, Wasted and Manifesto Juke Box. The band quickly established themselves as a local must-see live act, bringing together fans of punk, hardcore and rock whenever they played.
IWTL released their debut album Badlands on Combat Rock Industry in 2004 and embarked on several tours of Germany and the UK, introducing the band to a wider international audience. Desolation Street was released in Europe in 2006 on Combat Rock Industry and was followed by continuous touring and promoting their signature dark punk sound to a wider audience.
They will be embarking on their first US tour in March 2007 with a stop scheduled for the Gearhead Records showcase at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas.
Gearhead Records established its presence as a leader in the rock n' roll/punk rock genre (known as punk n' roll) when they had a break-out hit with The Hives from Sweden, and shortly after, The Hellacopters and New Bomb Turks. They continued to find and release up and coming bands and in 2003 discovered The Riverboat Gamblers, who later went on to sign with Volcom Records.

After I started Gearhead, I came to rely on Tower Records as one of the only national chain stores that would stock Gearhead releases. Most other chain stores like Virgin, or Best Buy, or Circuit City required labels to "pay to play", that is, pay for shelf space in their stores with required "marketing dollars". This is why you should ALWAYS buy from independent stores if you can. Tower was always run by music fans, and staffed by music fans, and if they liked a record, they made sure it got some exposure. My local Tower, here is Davis CA, has been instrumental in helping make everyone from "Demons" to Gitogito Hustler local favs. Aaron and crew never failed to play my records in the store, put up posters and turn customers onto something new, just because they dug what Gearhead was doing. If it hadn't been for Tower, bands like Mensen and NRA might never have seen shelf space in this ever shrinking "brick and mortar" retail climate.
This is not to say there hasn't been major support from small independently owned stores around the country, but Tower really always acted more like an indie store than a big corporation. They had a national presence, but the heart of an indie, and for that I will always truly be grateful. I am so sad to see the end of this company. Its almost impossible to find deep catalog at any store these days, it just costs too much to keep that sort of inventory on the shelves. But being the eternal optimist that I am, I hope that Tower closing will give independent record stores around the country a much needed boost in customer patronage. Independent stores are the life-blood of small labels like Gearhead, so please go out and support your local record store. Too many stores have closed already. For more information on Tower closing, click here.
